One of the world's oldest and most unique dog breeds. Known as the "barkless dog" from the Congo Basin, the Basenji is an elegant, intelligent companion unlike any other.

The Basenji is one of the most ancient dog breeds known to humankind. Paleontologists tell us that the first domesticated dogs looked remarkably similar to today's Basenjis. Their story stretches back thousands of years to the dense rainforests and savannas of Central Africa.
Known locally as "M'bwa M'kube M'bwa Wamwitu" — the jumping-up-and-down dog — Basenjis were invaluable hunting companions to the Pygmy peoples of the Congo Basin. Their silence in the field, keen eyesight, and extraordinary agility made them perfect partners for tracking game through thick undergrowth.

Dogs resembling Basenjis depicted in Egyptian tomb paintings and brought as gifts to Pharaohs from the source of the Nile.
Used by Pygmy tribes as hunting dogs in the dense rainforests of Central Africa, prized for their silence and agility.
First Basenjis exhibited at Crufts in England as 'Congo Terriers,' though early imports did not survive.
Successful breeding programs established in England and the US. AKC officially recognised the breed in 1944.
The first specimens of the Basenji were brought from the source of the Nile as presents to the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Basenji-like dogs appear in artwork from the Twelfth Dynasty, making them over 4,000 years old.
The Basenji's temperament is a captivating blend of independence, loyalty, and playfulness that sets them apart from every other breed.
Basenjis form intense bonds with their family. They are loving and solicitous with those they trust, often choosing one or two favourite people.
Always watching, always exploring. Basenjis are endlessly curious about their environment and will investigate anything new with keen interest.
Often compared to cats, Basenjis groom themselves meticulously, have no doggy odour, and possess an independent streak that makes them fascinatingly unique.
Highly intelligent but independent thinkers. They learn quickly but on their own terms — training requires patience, creativity, and positive reinforcement.
Alert and careful with people they don't know, Basenjis prefer to make the first overtures. Once they warm up, they are open and calm.
Beneath their poised exterior lies a playful, mischievous spirit. They love games, toys, and running at full speed in safe, enclosed spaces.

Expressive wrinkles that deepen when alert or curious, giving them their signature 'worried' look.
Tall, pointed ears that swivel independently to catch every sound in their environment.
A distinctive tight curl that sits over one hip — a hallmark of the breed.
Dark, expressive eyes that convey a range of subtle, almost human-like emotions.
A fine, smooth coat that lies close to the body and comes in red, black, brindle, and tricolour.
Graceful and poised at rest, but capable of explosive speed and agility at a trot.
Basenjis are famous for not barking. Their unusually shaped larynx produces a unique yodelling sound called a "barroo" — a delightful sound somewhere between a chortle and a yodel. They can also whine, growl, and even scream when particularly excited.
While they don't bark, Basenjis are far from silent — they are wonderfully expressive communicators.
Basenjis are relatively low-maintenance in grooming but require dedicated exercise and thoughtful training to thrive.

"A tired Basenji is a well-behaved Basenji."
— Every Basenji Owner
Basenjis are generally healthy dogs with a lifespan of 13–14 years. Responsible breeders screen for these key health conditions.
A kidney disorder unique to Basenjis. DNA testing identifies carriers and affected dogs, allowing breeders to prevent the condition entirely.
An inherited eye disease that can lead to blindness. DNA testing ensures breeding pairs won't produce affected puppies.
X-ray evaluation of hip joints to ensure proper formation and reduce the risk of joint problems.
Blood testing to screen for hypothyroidism, which can affect metabolism, coat quality, and energy levels.
Annual ophthalmologist examination to check for hereditary eye conditions beyond PRA.
Physical examination of the kneecaps to ensure they track properly and don't slip out of position.
